danko day 1 part 3 (06:42)

06:42 on Day 1

"Eve gave me directions to where the Kain family lives. It's just a short walk away. The town feels empty compared to what I'm used to back in the capital. My mind is full of things to ask Simon when I finally get to meet him. I guess the silence here lets you think more clearly and without interruptions. There's no traffic on the streets. I haven't seen a single vehicle or horse since I arrived here, but there are a few other people up and about even at this early hour."

The Bachelor arrives at the home of the Kains, Horns:

"Before long I reach the 'Horns', three tall buildings. They almost look a bit like small castles. There's no name on any of the buildings, so I guess I will have to enter the closest one and ask where I can find George and Simon."

[missing transition images.]

"This turned out to be the house of Victor Kain, the youngest of the three brothers. While I'm here I might as well introduce myself. He should know where his brothers are."

VERSUS
Victor Kain: The famous doctor Dankovskiy... Your arrival is a great honor for us. Victor Kain at your service.
Bachelor: Daniel Dankovskiy at yours.
Victor Kain: I think that many of the things that we take for granted here will probably make you uncomfortable or even feel disgusted. I would like to soften that impression. You know, our small society has been left behind while the rest of our country is changing. Time has passed us by.
Bachelor: What do you mean?
Victor Kain: I mean the traditions. Games we play with passion will probably be of no interest to you. People here may seem eccentric or naive. Please, do not judge us too strictly.
Bachelor: I hope we will be able to work in an atmosphere of mutual trust.
Victor Kain: George is waiting for you, my friend. The news he has for you will be unexpected. I ask only one thing of you - do not reject his request too quickly.
Bachelor: What does he want from me?
Victor Kain: He will explain everything better than I can. We had great hopes when we heard you were coming here. That is why he wants your help in solving quite a complicated problem.
Bachelor: Like what?
Victor Kain: It's not really something within your specialty, but we are certain you are the only person who can help our family.
Bachelor: Okay, I'll speak to George.

"I take my leave and head for the building where George Kain lives. It looks pretty much the same to me. But there's certainly a lot of impressive buildings in this neighborhood."

[missing images showing off the interior of George's home, such as the hideous fireplace.]

"His home is rather cozy, but I am a bit puzzled by his taste in furniture and decorations. That fireplace is hideous! In one of the rooms I find George. My sudden appearance seems to have startled him and he starts speaking quickly as soon as I approach him."

VERSUS
George Kain: Most respected doctor! We have been expecting you with great impatience. You need not state the details of your visit. We, the Kains, know of your work and were prepared to give you any assistance possible. The more sorrowful it is for me to inform you of the fact that Simon, my brother of flesh and blood, the creator, keeper and embodiment of all that surrounds us... has been murdered.
Bachelor: I can't believe it... It cannot be!
George Kain: My brother was murdered tonight. Murdered mysteriously, under the strangest of circumstances. However, I do not want to suspect that his... departure was connected to the visitor that Simon received that evening. That visitor, a man of great honor and an old friend of our family, had only been discussing some important matters with my brother... in the presence of witnesses.
Bachelor: Who was that visitor?
George Kain: You know the man. Last night, your college Isidor Burakh paid a visit to my brother. It was he that invited you here by letter, wasn't it?
Bachelor: Yes.
George Kain: Hmm... Isidor has done more than he knows... I have a feeling that refuses to leave me. It seems fate is executing it's plans and we are helpless to stop it. What do you think?
Bachelor: I do not believe in fate.
George Kain: Perhaps my mind is clouded with sorrow. I do not think that your arrival was a coincidence, my dear doctor. Not much here depended entirely on your own will. However, let's not blame fate for that. We did know about the letter. Isidor wrote it, even if he feared it would provoke the wrath of our family.
Bachelor: Really?
George Kain: We didn't know for sure if you were really coming or not, but my brother had been preparing for the meeting. The tragedy may be a consequence of something he did because of that. Someone has taken a powerful piece off the chessboard. A piece which your position here depended upon. It's a pity that Simon was playing on your side.
Bachelor: I truly feel sorry about your loss. Is there anything I can do to help you?
George Kain: Do you really want to help us, doctor? Find the killer for us. My brother Victor, who is in the wing next door, already has some thoughts on the matter. Help us and we will reward us.
Bachelor: Yes, it seems like there are too many coincidences. Your brother's murder could bring my ruin as well. I will help you in any way I can.
George Kain: I am convinced that if there is anyone at all that can help us solve this puzzle, it is you. This missions requires a man of your intellect. If Isidor was a weapon in the hands of fate, then Simon's murder is a message directly for you. I don't blame you for it, though.
Bachelor: How do you plan to look for the killer?
George Kain: We will take our measures. From you I ask only one thing - be yourself. Do what you feel is needed. Whatever you find out, whatever you do, to whatever conclusions each day drives you, everything will give us clues as to the solution of this puzzle.
Bachelor: Fine. I think that would be wise.

"From now on I'll make sure I write down everything I need to do in my notebook. Every small step can be important to solving this."

Main quest for day 1: Pursuing the killer posted:

Find out who killed Simon Kain, the immortal man... Oh, I want that no less than his brothers. Regardless of who is behind this, my desire to punish this murderer is growing within me. Even if it's someone the Authorities has sent to prevent me from meeting with Simon, I will not stop until I find him. Whoever it was got the timing down a bit too well for it to be just a coincidence.

We just got our first daily quest. There are 12 days until the end, and each day requires the completion of the main quest for that day. The main quest is very hard to miss and there are instructions for where to start it arriving by mail during the morning if you are not outright told what to do the day before.

If you do not complete the main quest before midnight, you have screwed up completely and you can no longer complete the game. It's therefore vital that you start it as soon as you can. Quests that are completed are marked with three stars, so it's very obvious if you are actually complete or if there are more steps.

You will also find hints on your town map. Anything that is marked with red is related to the main quest while yellow is for optional stuff. Marks goes away at midnight, at the same time as the quests they are tied to.

"Since it seems like I will have to do some investigating, I took out my map of the town. I have marked down the houses of Victor and George Kain, as well as Eva's house. It is quite detailed and I will mark down the location of my immediate objectives there."

"For now I will talk to Victor again and see if he can give me some ideas on where to start searching. Entering his house again I notice he has an identical fireplace, but with a slightly more cheerful painting hanging over it. But only slightly."

VERSUS
 (ROUND TWO!)

Victor Kain: How can I help you?
Bachelor: George told me everything. What he said was enough to astound me. He said your story would be more informative.
Victor Kain: So, you've agreed to help us, have you?
Bachelor: Yes.
Victor Kain: May I ask why?
Bachelor: A mutual tragedy unites us. I want to bring vengeance on the one who deprived me and my work of any kind of future.
Victor Kain: I am prepared to answer all your questions.
Bachelor: When was Simon seen here for the last time?
Victor Kain: He let Isidor go and an hour later he came out to us in the main hall. He said he's off to the Inner Chamber and will not receive any more visitors. He also ordered us to stay away from the Chamber. He told everyone in the house to restrain from eating meat and drinking water taken from the house for a week. He was found dead in the morning.
Bachelor: Could it be a poisoning?
Victor Kain: No. He didn't eat or drink for several days. Before that, he drank only wine from the bottles in the old wine storage. He opened the bottles personally.
Bachelor: Why did he take such precautionary measures?
Victor Kain: ... It didn't really cross my mind. Really, were they precautions at all? He was always experimenting with himself. Not only with his body, but with his time, language, way of thinking... even with his fate.
Bachelor: Maybe his death is also a result of such an experiment?
Victor Kain: I think, between you and me, that is precisely what scares my brother George. I can say nothing more about that.
Bachelor: How did they find the body?
Victor Kain: The servants found him in the morning. The room was in ruin. Everything that could break was broken. His disfigured body was found in a twisted position with signs of terrible torment on his face. His neck and spine were broken, I think. No one touched him. The body is in the Inner Chamber at the moment and will stay there for now.
Bachelor: Are you suspecting anyone?
Victor Kain: No. All I know is that Isidor was with him in the evening. No one will be able to enter the Inner Chamber against Simon's will.
Bachelor: Could the killer have been waiting for Simon there?
Victor Kain: No. You have no idea what the Inner Chamber is. Entering it is the same as entering another man's head, or perhaps a picture on a piece of paper. It's impossible.
Bachelor: What is the Inner Chamber?
Victor Kain: It's hard to explain... It's a place where he worked, if you like. Something like a creative laboratory with limitless space inside. If you try to think of it in terms of geometry you won't be able to imagine any of it. Except the door, which is always visible, allegorically speaking.
Bachelor: I don't understand.
Victor Kain: It's something like an equation or a puzzle with mirrors. In any case, the killer couldn't have been hiding in there. Take my word for it.
Bachelor: Well, Simon managed to get in there.
Victor Kain: He could perform much more impressive things. It isn't for nothing that everyone in the town revere him... I mean revered him.
Bachelor: Ok. But how can I actually help you?
Victor Kain: Just take a look around. Trust your intuition. Do what you want, speak with whoever you feel the need to speak to. Look for the killer, doctor, and you will find him. I'm sure your rational thinking will help you.
Bachelor: So the only key in this case is Isidor... How can I find him?
Victor Kain: I'll show you, but you must be careful. Simon's killer, whoever it is, cannot be an ordinary person. I cannot imagine a real person even wanting to do something like that. I am afraid that it can only be fate in the form of some mysterious monster.
Bachelor: I will be careful.

[missing transition image.]

Main quest update posted:

Isidor Burakh, my dear college and a honest man. He is the one who advised me to come here, and he was the last one to see Simon alive. I will start my investigation with a visit to his house.

Summary: All hell has broken loose and Simon has been murdered! It seems like he did indeed have super-human abilities, at least if we are to believe his brothers. He was found dead inside what is called the Inner Chamber, a sort of non-material place that only he and his closest friends could enter. Unless Simon wanted you to come there, you could never find a way in. So how did the killer get there? Is the killer even human, or are we dealing with some sort of demon here?

The Bachelor doesn't know what the hell is real and what isn't, but he has one lead. Isidor, the person who invited him to this town in the first place, is a well known and trusted person in this town and was the last person to visit Simon. He lives on the other end of town, so we'll drop by his house next time.
