I just had a great idea! There's hardly any risk involved either. Sure, Lara would probably be very angry at me if she found out all the details, but I doubt she'll have the nerves to poke her nose that far in.
First I need to visit Anna and ask her for the broken gun.
Bachelor: All right, you've convinced me. If Lara gets hold a real gun she'll probably get herself in some real danger. Give me your miniature gun. I shall give it to her right away.
Just from looking at it you can't really see anything obviously wrong with it, but when I tried to use it without bullets it seemed like there's something wrong with the hammer. It looks sort of silly to shoot with even if it would be working, but then again I've never used a pistol like this. Seems like it wouldn't be very accurate and I don't really have much use for concealment at a time like this.
I guess for what Lara is planning that would have done the trick. Except in this case things won't work out like she expects them to. She's too naive about things like this, and it's probably for her best, anyway. Sooner or later she'd get desperate enough to just pick up a knife from the kitchen and try to attack the general with that, and then it would be impossible to convince him she's not completely raving mad. I can't figure out a good way to calm her down and I honestly have better things to do with my time, but the general should easily be able to handle an angry woman.
I need to make sure I hide this thing properly before I talk to the general. He's probably laugh really hard if he saw it sticking out of my coat pocket, and it would ruin my plan.
Bachelor: I have heard about an impending attack on you. Do you know about this?
General Block: Someone's foolish joke! I received a mad letter, obviously written by a woman that's out of her mind. Yes, she used some pathetic expressions to warn me about another vengeful lady. That's her, right?
Bachelor: No, you have the wrong impression. She is a quite serious young woman.
General Block: In this town there is only one woman I am afraid of. If she wants to arrange an assassination, then I will be lost for sure. Although, I do not think she would use such extravagant means for that purpose.
Bachelor: She is the woman with the wit and will of a man. Her name is Julia, and she owns a private residence in the Edge district. It should be labeled "Seine" on your map.
General Block: I'm glad you have such good knowledge of this town, because I certainly can't figure it out. Fine, I shall send some of my men there right away. Let her be put under house arrest until I have time to get acquainted with her properly.
Bachelor: There's something else. Rumors about this attempt has already circulated between the young ladies of the town, and it's possible that someone else might try to do the same thing. But I don't think most of them are capable of something like this. Just make sure they don't get in harms way.
General Block: I understand. There are so many intrigues in this town, and people are desperate. If someone else comes we will not shoot them. We have a working prison in the building in case they offer resistance.
Bachelor: Thank you, general.
It seems like he's trusting me, but I am not completely sure about how his men will handle such a strange order. I'll have to check up on Julia later. But first, I have to get the gun to Lara. I'm sure the general has heard of her strange sense of 'charity' and if she comes along with a broken gun he'll be ready for it.
Bachelor: Take this. It's a double-barreled pocket pistol. It took some effort to get hold of it, Lara. Be careful with it.
Lara: Thank you. Here you go. I wanted you to have this panacea anyway.
Bachelor: It's an unequal exchange, but thanks anyway. I will probably give it back to you soon.
It's not like I'm proud of tricking Lara, especially when I saw the sense of relief in her eyes. She must have been denied a dozen times or more already. Still, just leaving her to her own fantasies would probably be much more dangerous and I can't watch her all the time. If the general locks her up and keeps her under check at least she won't try to kill herself until... Well, until this town goes back to normal, or as close to normal as things will ever get after something like this.
Julia's house is pretty close by. I could see some army men guarding the building, but when I got closer they started shouting and a few of them ran towards me.
An ambush!
It seems like some of the riflemen here have gone rogue and will try to kill you as soon as your approach. They won't shoot you and instead they'll try to hit you with their rifles.
The riflemen have a REALLY short melee range, so you can easily just focus on one of them at a time as long as you back up a bit once someone tries to attack you. I don't think I've ever got hit by any of them, but of course a DAMN RAT got in a few good bites.
And with the guards dead it's time for the looting. Three of the guards will drop rifles and the rest will drop some basic food items. Hey, loads of free rifles! What a coincidence.
Bachelor: What do you mean, mistakes?!
Julia: I've heard some cries outside. What was it?
Bachelor: Your new 'friends' attacked me when I got here. Either Block got them trained so hard for combat they can't tell friend from foe or he doesn't have his whole army under control. Both alternatives are rather scary.
Julia: Indeed? Well, you offered them a fitting resistance?
Bachelor: I certainly did.
Julia: So things didn't quite go according to my calculations. Well, Bachelor Dankovskiy, it seems like it's best not to involve you in any more business where the powers of fate are involved. I owe you a panacea, right?
Bachelor: Exactly.
Bachelor: I have given the pistol to Lara. It's done.
Anna: And here is my award! You see? I give it to you, and I part with it as easily as I got it in the first place. What, are you admiring me?
Bachelor: I'm absolutely fascinated.
Summary: I didn't know it until recently (thanks Irony.or.Death for the info) but you can complete all three of the mini-tasks to get the reward three times! With Panacea as the prize, I'm not one to complain about taking some extra time. If we're ever in big trouble during the last few days, we can probably use one of them.
If you don't have enough rifles even after doing these quests, I believe you can also raid an army supply but I never had a chance to do that with the time limit being so low on day 9.
We now have enough rifles to get inside the Tower, but we also need to find and talk to Burakh before the day is over.
