Bachelor: I examined your blood. There's something strange about it, but I can't quite figure it out. There are no signs of infection... To be honest, I have no idea what to do now.
Klara: I have thought about this and I've decided. Give me to the Inquisitor. I will have to face him sooner or later anyway. You have the full right to do that and then he will have no reason to be angry at you. And the main thing is that you will not be mistaken.
Bachelor: I have already told you. Regardless of what you think, you're not a witch or anything of that sort. Is my word not enough for you?
Klara: But the people are probably right. Most likely I have something to do with the spreading of the illness. And even if I wasn't the cause of it, I shall help the Inquisitor in finding everything out. He will get the truth from me.
Bachelor: On the torturing wheel... No. This will never be!
Klara: Well, I never... Torture? Can the Inquisitors do that?
Bachelor: You didn't know? You were obviously born just yesterday.
Klara: Anyway, no matter how hard I'll try I can't hide from him forever. So let's say that you were the one who found me and will hand me over to him. It will be a victory! Right? Why do you still frown?
Bachelor: What is the cost of such a victory? The true enemy is still not found. Or do you think that I'll act just like they do? To present as truth that which favors me most? To tell lies to everyone and to myself? Like those who now judge our destiny and whom I despise so much... I refuse!
I have some time until the showdown with the arsonists tonight. I better rest and tend to my wounds. Even with my newly purchased army rifle I need to be very careful. Even just traveling to the Apiary is very dangerous so late in the day.
Due to the huge amount of running you do on some days, you won't be able to fully recharge your Exhaustion meter. If it's ever maxed out, you take damage to your Health at a low rate. It's a bit strange that you get physical wounds from staying up late, but it works decently well as a penalty. It's not really a problem if you have enough medical supplies. It's silly that a bandage is more effective than a cup of coffee, though.
The bandits are scouring the edges of the infected districts tonight. They will probably find fewer victims there, but most of them will be weak from the infected air and rat bites.
I almost forgot! I need to report back to Spichka. I can't leave him wondering about his strange creature, because then he'll just rush out and look for himself again! If I walk along the riverside I can avoid most of the dangers around here.
Bachelor: I found your strange being. It answered me when I talked to him.
Spichka: I never thought he could actually speak! Then what happened?
Bachelor: It's strange that my hair hasn't turned gray already. It definitely wasn't human, but what it actually was, only the devil knows.
Spichka: You see! And you said you did not believe in the Shabnak! Did you defeat him?
Bachelor: No, that strange being seemed defenseless to me. It didn't seem to like my presence, but it wasn't aggressive in any way. To be honest, it just seemed hungry. I really don't think it was the Spreader I was looking for.
This is the entrance to the Apiary. There aren't any grand gates or anything. I guess they went just for function when they built it. Just looking at it makes me feel depressed. I can't imagine what it must feel like for all the people locked up inside!
I'm too late! The attack has already started, and the guards are fighting for their lives!
The rifle is rather slow to reload and only holds one bullet at a time, so it's best to use when you can prepare for the fight in advance. Since you don't want to risk wasting even a single shot, try to get rather close to your target before firing. Aim for the chest since it's easier to hit. Almost everything dies in one shot, so you don't have to try to hit the head.
Hey! There's the Hump! He's holding on to something, but I can't quite see what it is.
Woah!
God damn, this hurts! Run! He hit me square in the chest with one of those bloody home-made bombs. I'm really glad for my sturdy coat right now, otherwise I'd be dead by now!
A hit like will in most cases kill you outright, just like the throwing knives. You can mitigate this somewhat with clothes, but you'll need sturdy ones for it to make much difference. For obvious reasons, I did a quick-load right after this.
The Hump has retreated to the main gate, but he can't escape that way! While the guard takes care of the last of the other ruffians, I'll go in for the kill with my rifle. This time he's going down!
Phew, finally it's over. I can't say I'm proud of my deed, but it had to be done.
It's time to report back to Young Vlad. He should be happy about it, at least. I'm just happy I can get away from this place. Most likely the Inquisitor will have the Apiary investigated when he arrives tomorrow, but that isn't really my problem. At least not yet.
The factory district along with the railways are very quiet and relatively safe. There aren't any people living here except the thieves hiding in the warehouses so the infection hasn't spread here yet. I wonder how long this will last.
Bachelor: The Hump is killed, Vlad. Without him, the instigators shouldn't have the courage to act.
Young Vlad: Our family will never forget you, doctor. It was a matter of honor. Here is the award that I promised you. You can also expect infinite gratitude from any of the Olgimskiy... At least the younger generation.
Bachelor: Good.
All my duties for today are done, although I can't really say if all of them were worth doing in the end. My clothes and my face look like a real mess after the fight, so I better head back to Eves house.
Have I told you I hate rats? One of these days I am going to use a rifle bullet on one, I swear.
I woke up early, after a restless sleep. No matter how many pills I take before going to bed, there's still that strange feeling of the infection slowly growing. Most of the time it's just making my head spin when I stand up, but I bet if I didn't have all these antibiotics in my bloodstream it would be much worse.
Klara isn't here anymore. I can only hope she took my advice and went into hiding for the time being, instead of running around trying to perform miracles out in public.
Eve was awake again even at this strange hour. Does she ever sleep? She told me a letter had arrived for me a while ago, while I slept.
Evening letter from the Authorities. The sixth day. posted:
We are very dissatisfied with the results of your recent actions. However, you still have a chance to redeem yourself. Obey the Inquisitor. Do not forget that though her first and foremost duty is the suppression of the epidemic at any cost, the Inquisitor's reputation demands that this should be achieved with the fewest possible losses.
The town must survive. We will not accept any more losses due to negligence or incompetence. If we lose the entire town, then all our efforts has been in vain.
Well, there's nothing really new in the letter... Still, there's something that really bothers me, but I can't quite figure out what it is.
We survived day 6, but only just. There's just not enough time in a day to rest up fully. Well, we can only push on and see what happens next.
Today the Cathedral got infected and most people inside are now dead. Rumors and accusations pointed toward a young woman who had somehow got past the guards, but I took a blood sample from all of them (most of them being rather reluctant to give one) and they were all clean.
I met a strange creature waiting outside the butchery gates. I can't quite make sense of what exactly it was, but it didn't seem aggressive and I doubt it would come further into town. Spichka seemed disappointed that I didn't fight it, but I saw no reason to.
The Hump is now dead, and his gang of arsonists should calm down. I guess I have done the town a great service, but I can't help but feel guilty about causing so many deaths.
Tomorrow the Inquisitor will arrive and things should stir up quite a bit!
