danko day 10 part 5 (08:29)

8:29 on Day 10

"I don't know what the Kains are up to, but I think I should get this sorted out pretty quickly. They act strange but it's not like they are asking me to do anything illegal. Given the amount of help they've given me so far, I can't just turn them down."

[oh look some flowers]

"It's nice to see some flowers still blossoming."

Horns visit number five hundred and eighty six.
George Kain: What do you want?
Bachelor: I want to talk to you. There's something I need your permission to do.
George Kain: Ah, yes. It is just as you imagine. When Isidor told me about you, my boy, I knew that I wanted my heir to be just like you... But I never had a son. Many of the Kains are subject to this curse.
Bachelor: What do you mean?
George Kain: I think it's because we leave too much life after ourselves. The kind of life which is similar to a feast, violent, blossoming, uncontrolled and unpredictable. The souls that belong to our children, we dissolve in this man-made legacy.
Bachelor: You're speaking just like a mystic. This isn't like you.
George Kain: Hah, didn't you come here looking for someone else?
Bachelor: I want to know the truth about Simon Kain.
George Kain: The truth about Simon Kain is of a sort that you can't explain to the common people. They are incapable of even conceive it. They want to know the destiny of his body. All right, Simon Kain has been struck by the Sand Dirt. His body was torn into drops and fibers. It's a pity that it's now impossible to show it to those who still doubt that. But Simon is still here. What would calm them down?
Bachelor: They would think you've gone mad if you stand by your words.
George Kain: And do you believe that, dear Bachelor?
Bachelor: No. But there is something strange going on that I can't really explain.
George Kain: Here is my last wish, then. Tell the Inquisitor that George Kain has gone mad, and that our house prepares for collective suicide. That will be enough for her. Certainly, as long as we are alive she will see us as an obstacle. Maybe she even will leave us in peace for a couple of more days, which is all that is needed.
Bachelor: But, this is in fact not the truth?
George Kain: No, it's not really the truth. It's just the truth when it comes to calming down her acute mind. We will leave our temporary lives for the sake of eternal revival. Go, my boy. She will trust your words.

"There's something very strange about George today, but I can't quite point it out. He looks the same, he talks with the same voice, but somehow the words that comes out are different. And his eyes are glowing with some inner determination where before there was only the dull shine of old age. It's very unsettling."

"I'm sure I've seen it somewhere before, in this town, but I can't quite recall where..."

Good morning, miss inquisitor. How's the inquisiting?
Aglaja Lilich: You wanted to talk to me, Bachelor? As equals, of course.
Bachelor: I have some important things for you. First of all, here are the blueprints. I hope you will take good care of them. Even during the lifetime the author has left, I don't believe he would be capable of recreating them.
Aglaja: No doubt. As far as I know about this author, he might not live for very long. With his phobias, alcohol problems and addiction to hallucinogenics, it's a wonder he hasn't suffered a nervous breakdown already...
Bachelor: However, when you speak about the brevity of his life, you mean something else, don't you?
Aglaja: What? No, I took him under my protection and I stand by my word. But people like him are always in danger. Always. And I cannot stay here forever. Tell me, how long have you known Petr?
Bachelor: Not very long. I only studied with his brother at the university.
Aglaja: Did he ever tell you that you were similar, in a sense? That if circumstances were different, he could have ended up in your place? And you in his? Ingenious people are constantly under the whims of fate.
Bachelor: I can't recall, but it seems like something he would say.
Aglaja: Well, let's look at the blueprints. What do you think about all this?
Bachelor: It's a masterpiece, no doubt about it.
Aglaja: Yes? I will have to study it closer. Can you return to me tomorrow?
Bachelor: Of course. But before you start, I have something else I need to talk to you about. Have you heard about the Kains?
Aglaja: My God, the past few days I have people telling me about the Kains almost constantly. They certainly are a strange family. Do you refer to something stranger than usual?
Bachelor: Yes. Where do you think Simon Kain is right now?
Aglaja: Well, part of him is in the heavens and the rest is buried in the ground, I believe. What else could happen to him? He's dead!
Bachelor: George Kain has gone mad, and has taken over the character of Simon. I think it's going to drive him to suicide, and I fear the rest of his family will join him.
Aglaja: That's nonsense! Don't tell me such ridiculous jokes. I am busy enough here as it is.
Bachelor: I have told you what I wanted. Make your own conclusions about it.
Aglaja: You seem serious about this. Well, that changes the matter... Yes, I shall certainly draw my own conclusions about it. Right now, in fact. That information, if it were true, would certainly have quite a high value. I might even dare to estimate the cost precisely. Hah, how can we, two very sly people, outwit each other? What do you think?
Bachelor: Ehm, I have my own opinions. If you allow, I would prefer to hold on to them.
Aglaja: Hahaha, just do that, until you return tomorrow.

"I hope I haven't angered Aglaja... At least not enough to make me one of her targets. I understand now why everyone in this town are so afraid of the Inquisitors. It was like she had been spying on my conversation with George. But she never leaves the Cathedral, and surely the Kains know how to keep their secrets safe."

"She was somehow different from before too. When she laid eyes on the blueprints, there was the same strange intensity in her eyes."

"Am I just imagining it or is the whole town going mad?"

Summary: The Kains has some strange plan, and convinced the Bachelor to play along with it. However, when we talked to Aglaja just like usual, she called us out on our 'trick' right away. We seem to have angered the Inquisitor and that's never a good thing.

Everyone's behaving in an unusual way, like they aren't quite themselves.

We still have a few things to take care of before the day is over, but we're running out of time and in just two days the end will come.
