The Chosen Characters (maybe fill this in with the other two later?)
Daniel Dankovskiy, the Bachelor is a sort of researching field doctor by trade. He has this fixation on death, and how humans could possibly escape it. This has caused him to be ridiculed by his colleges, and he is at risk of losing his job if he can't come up with something actually useful in his research. He is drawn to the town as a desperate last measure, because of a tip by one of his former colleges. While he is generally quite smart, he quickly gets angry if someone is questioning his methods. Initially, he doesn't seem to care very much for the town.
- Daniel will often try to find a scientific solution to his problems.
- Daniel gets easy access to medicine and some unique tools to help him stay healthy.
- Daniel is good with guns, which keeps him out of harms way. Ammo is expensive, however.
- Daniel builds relationships with the intellectual people of the town.*
- Daniel is more reliant on money than the other characters. This is usually not a problem.
There are two other characters, and playing as them changes the story rather radically. There are also quite a lot of gameplay differences between them. The Bachelor is pretty much the easiest (if you can ever call this game easy) of them and it's the best one to start with.
*This are the people of the path of Utopia, one of the "three faiths" that is described by Katherine Saburov as such:
"Finally, the ideas of people who wanted to overcome limits set for human beings by nature and life led to all sorts fantastical and audacious schemes. Thus emerged and flourished the faction of creativity and invention, the party of Kains. Their faith is the faith in Utopia. Faith in miracles. Faith in the place that doesn’t exist."
some klara stuff:
You can fight without using a weapon. For the Bachelor and Haruspicus, you can do quick jabs, and also use the other mouse button to parry. This has a short range and doesn't do much damage, so you want to get a weapon as soon as possible.
The Devotress has a different way of fighting unarmed. Instead of hitting things with her fists, she extends her open hand with the palm forward. This will hurt anything that's standing in front of her, and the range is much longer than even the knife. While this attack is much slower, it deals quite a lot of damage. It's extremely good against the knife wielding robbers and other close combat enemies, because you can walk backwards and still hit with your attacks, while they can't ever get close enough to you to stab you.
The downside is that you are very limited in actual weapons. It's harder for her to get a revolver and ammo for it. I think it's impossible for her to use any other ranged weapons. This mean there are some enemies you will want to avoid at all costs, simply because fighting them in close combat will get you killed.
Outside combat, she will automatically know which parts of town are infected. On the downside, her reputation (which we don't need to worry about as the Bachelor, unless we want to kill innocent people for some reason) drains constantly. To make up for this you normally use painkillers on plague victims. She can as an alternative transfer her health to the victim if she doesn't have any painkillers but this hurts her quite a lot.
