danko day 7 part 4 (11:13)

11:13 on Day 7

Well, I have no idea on how to approach the agents just yet... Artemiy wanted my help, though, so I can deal with that until I figure something out. His letter told me that the Theater might have some supplies left.

This place is filling up more and more, and now there's hardly any room left. I don't see anyone attending the wounded, either. It's almost feeling like a morgue to me.

: All to the best, in this the best of all worlds.

Bachelor: I need a mask and overall.

Mark: My god, did you really decide to join my troupe? No, no, that would have been too great of an honor to us... So, the Inquisitor degraded you to an Executor?

Bachelor: Something like that.

Mark: Everything that I had is already gone, distributed elsewhere. They were used by the ones conducting the recent mass burials. They took everything they could from our stage supplies.

Bachelor: Who decided to use theater costumes for that?

Mark: Saburov. He appointed someone from the town to manage the cremations. He's signed that person's death sentence... It's hardly possible to survive on that post. All the Executors used suits like that, and today they gathered up corpses and piled them in a ditch near the cemetery. Maybe some of them are still nearby. If they won't give you a coat and mask, bring your complaints to Saburov.

Bachelor: Well, that's obvious. Thanks for the help.

I think I know what Mark was talking about, but that grave was filled to the brim a few days ago! I understand why they'd need to start cremating the corpses now, but surely that must cause a lot of commotion among the steppe people?

They aren't even trying to bury the dead now, or even cover them up properly. It's such a pity. I can't see any attendants around either... Oh.

Nothing I can do to help him now. I can't recognize the face, so I don't think it's the one put in charge. He has an undamaged cloak on him, but no mask. I'll just take whatever I can here and then I'll need to talk to Saburov.

You'll probably take a lot of small detours during day 7, because there are streets like the ones near the riverside that are clean and that spans large parts of the town. There's a lot of running to do, but if you manage to avoid long rests it's usually worth it to play it safe.

The train the Inquisitor arrived on also carried quite a lot of supplies. I talked to the shopkeeper, and he offered me fresh meat at a low price, but said that much of the stock had been bought up early in the day.

It's probably a good idea to stock up on food now, while the prices are low. We have a decent-sized amount already but it never hurts to have some extras. You can always sell them off again if the prices increase.

: I have transferred my powers to the Inquisitor. I've had enough!

Bachelor: Did you give the order to stop with the mass burial and instead just cremate all the bodies?

Alexander: It was not a popular decision, but I did so at last. I did it right before I handed my duties over to Aglaja Lilich.

Bachelor: Who did you appoint as manager of the burials?

Alexander: Someone named Petr Stamatin. You do not know him.

Bachelor: You are mistaken, I know him very well. I cannot imagine a more idiotic appointment.

Alexander: From your point of view, yes. I see it much differently. There's an iron logic in my decision.

Bachelor: Cancel it! Choose someone else.

Alexander: In our town there is no one more deserving of death than Peter Stamatin! Even if the street murderers were reliable enough for me to charge them with such work, I would still choose him.

Bachelor: This is madness!

Alexander: No. The verdict is final and not subject to appeal.

Bachelor: I'll see about that.

Petr really shouldn't be drinking so much. He may have a lot to worry about, but this won't solve any of his problems.

: I'm glad to see you.

Bachelor: They say you received the theater masks the Executors use.

Petr: Yes, that is true. You know about this already?

Bachelor: Does Saburov really wish death upon you?

Petr: He counts me as a degenerate murderer. There is one disgusting crime in my past. Old affairs, but I shall tell you a secret... I'm not guilty in that. I did not kill him, even though I wanted to, and could have done it.

Bachelor: Who did you want to kill so badly?

Petr: One of my architect colleagues. He received promotions and praise, far beyond his actual talent. You see, he nearly convinced the rulers of this town to stop all my projects and let him take over. He wanted to see me fail at any cost... Yes, he deserved death, but I did not kill him.

Bachelor: Who did, then?

Petr: I cannot tell you. If I could, why would I be torturing myself now, you think? They say he fell from a great height and broke his neck, and so he died. There are other rumors as well, about poisoned drinks...

Bachelor: Normally this would be enough evidence for a trial. Many people in this town think you are suspicious.

Petr: Well, Saburov hasn't found any proof, so he can't bring me to a real trial. He is trying to get rid of me in other ways.

Bachelor: But Saburov has lots of other pressing duties. Are you sure he's actually serious about trying to kill you?

Petr: Yes, yes! Actually, I wish he'd just give me at least three more days. Could you arrange something so that he'd leave me alone?

Bachelor: Why only three days?

Petr: I need to finish my greatest creation. I just need to draw the plans, with all the calculations. Then it will be possible for me to die bravely. Is there nobody that can stand against this villain, especially since he has given away all his powers? Would you help me?

Bachelor: The Inquisitor will teach the former Commandant. I shall talk to her.

Petr: Thank you. Not for myself, but for the art.

It's slightly unnerving to talk to someone who is high on Twyrine. Instead of the usual slurring from the town drunks, they talk very properly but you get the feeling that their mind aren't quite in the same world as the rest of us anymore.

I will take my chances and hope that Aglaja has some sympathy for the people affected by the power struggles of this town.

The guards are really stupid today. This guy was hit by about two fire bottles right in the head without even reacting. He died pretty quickly. Well, better him than us!

: Yes? If you have any questions, just ask.

Bachelor: I wanted to ask you a favor. Saburov, having abused the authority given to him, is putting a man named Petr Stamatin in excessive risk.

Aglaja: What for?

Bachelor: It seems he wants to settle some personal dispute with him.

Aglaja: And who is this Petr?

Bachelor: He's the architect who designed the tower on the other side of the river.

Aglaja: Really? Interesting. Well, then he certainly deserves to keep his life.

Bachelor: Thank you.

Aglaja: And what did Saburov do to put him in danger?

Bachelor: He appointed him to manage the cremations. It's a dangerous work, because he has to deal constantly with the dead and the dying.

Aglaja: This can be changed. We shall find a replacement to him. Now I want a favor of you as well. It is strange to admit, but in this town I cannot even reach the person I want to talk to the most. Only you can help me with that. I have found out that the unapproachable daughter of Victor Kain fell in love with you.

Bachelor: Really? She didn't show it when I talked to her. Her behavior is rather strange, though.

Aglaja: I don't doubt that. But my request is very important. The destiny of this whole settlement may depend on it. Please, arrange a meeting for me with my favorite relative. She will not refuse you.

Bachelor: Wait a minute, you're related to Maria?

Aglaja: Yes. I am fond of her, but the feelings are not mutual. She has a prejudice against me. Once, in the past, I offended her and she hasn't forgiven me. She is also frightened by scary stories about the Inquisitors. Ridiculous childish prejudice. Now, then we are both young women a new meeting should remove the old memories.

Bachelor: But how can I help you?

Aglaja: I do not wish to intrude by force into the house of a person dear to me. I need an invitation to come in... Convince her that I do not wish her any harm! Or just take me to her and say that you have brought a friend, and then I can speak to her.

Bachelor: Fine.

Summary: We found a coat at the cemetery, but no mask. Petr can help us get the mask that Artemiy asked for. However, Petr is in trouble because Alexander Saburov wants him dead. Petr wants us to guarantee his safety until he can finish his last design. We need to talk to the Inquisitor about that.
