danko day 4 part 8 (20:24)

20:24 on Day 4

Recap of day 4 so far... We have been tasked with examining the theater, one of the warehouses and the cathedral to see if they are suited for use as emergency hospitals and such. We have the keys to the theater and cathedral but haven't been inside yet.

Alexander asked us to sort out some violent outbreaks among the thieves hiding in the warehouse districts. Some gang has split off from the main and more cautious pack of thieves, and we had to go rough a few of them up, by shooting them in the head. Turns out they were hiding in the warehouse that is going to be a morgue. Strange Russian humor, there.

Victor Kain asked us to check the part of town that got infected first, and it turns out the disease has completely burned out and the place is very clean. It's however filled with marauders who rob people's houses. In a few days the place is probably back to normal.

"Having to fight in a small space like that really got my heart pumping. Even armed with a gun, it's hard to find time to aim properly, and it was probably only my jumpy reflexes that got me though it alive.

Outside the house there are quite a lot of guards. They seem to have their hands full already, so I need to be careful on my way out of here. Even if I check the map closely, there's no easy way to get to the Theater without traveling through dangerous parts."

[infection > brigands]

"I'm going to take my chance with the infected districts. At least then the dangers will be fairly obvious. I just hope my bleeding won't attract any attention."

I have a really bad habit of running around with low health instead of playing it safe and using bandages. I guess it's a left over from my first run where I had practically no bandages ever. You can actually keep yourself alive with relatively little problem as long as you are very very paranoid.

[guard fail]

"Damn it, this blockade isn't working with so few guards! I've seen a few times where the infected citizens make dashes for what they probably see as freedom. They are always hunted down, but they often make it a few blocks away. Don't they realize they can get people killed that way?

After a short run to get away from the awful infected area, I come to the Theater."

Executor: Is it true that you ordered the Theater into a... morgue?
Bachelor: Sir, it will be turned into a hospital. A hospital!
Executor: Oh, then please examine the premise at once.
Bachelor: Are the water springs working smoothly?
Executor: Yes, you can be convinced that everything is as it should be, most respectable Bachelor.
Bachelor: Well, keep doing your duties.

"Well, I better check inside. I have been here before, of course, but only as a member of the audience and only when I've had my mind on other things."

[theatre!]

It seems a bit small to house a complete hospital, but there's plenty of room for beds on the upper floors and on the stage. I think it will be our best option for the hospital.

"I also need to examine the Cathedral, but Victor Kain lives just next to it and I have to report back to him about my success in hunting marauders."

[kains]

Victor Kain: I do not want to think that we are being devoured alive, but judging from the rate the infection is spreading it's true.
Bachelor: I have examined the previously infected district. I dare state that all you said was true. It's really clean. I also took care of some of the marauders while exploring.
Victor Kain: Good news! It will influence the fate of any new victims of this epidemic.
Bachelor: I also have good news. If we pull together and gather all the healthy people in isolation, the illness will be stopped. It will burn itself out, like a forest fire.
Victor Kain: How can you be sure that the illness doesn't already live inside a seemingly healthy person, and just hasn't manifested yet? I do not dare to doubt your competence, but until the source of the infection is established it's too early to say that our enemy is conquered...
Bachelor: Yes, that is true. But the isolation ward can soon be used. The city Cathedral will be the place for the ward. It seems quite suitable for it.
Victor Kain: Oh? Well, the Cathedral was planned as a shelter for the suffering. At last it will be used for that purpose.
Bachelor: Those who are already infected will probably try to enter the Cathedral as well, but we'll have to make sure they don't get in.

Task Update: Locked district posted:

The district is really clean, though still very dangerous - for a completely different reason. The guard patrol can drive the marauders out of the houses easier than we can chase the infection out, however. It's possible to prepare the district for re-settlement, and do the same thing with other infected districts later. Victor really succeeded with this.

[cathedral!]

Young Man: Do you wish to see the Cathedral?
Bachelor: Is there a working water spring inside?
Young Man: Yes, there's even two. We have examined them and they are in working order. There was some problems with the town water pipe earlier, and a lot of people are scared to drink the water from the river now, so we had to make sure the other wells were clean...
Bachelor: Yes, it's best not to drink the water from the river if you can avoid it.

"The building certainly looks impressive on the outside, but I realized I had no idea what I would find inside. Everyone who has spoken about it seems to think it wasn't ever put into proper use. I haven't seen a proper priest in this town and no real religious images or items, but surely a building of that size must have required considerable support from the townspeople."

[inside cathedral!]

"Ehm, this certainly doesn't look like any Christian church I have ever visited... It's so bleak and hostile."

[more - the throne too]

"A throne? What sort of strange worship has been going on in here?"

[creepy face thing]

"Whoever designed this place must have made it as an insult to all sensible religion. Instead of any religious images there's only this scribbled face! It's like it's in agony, but it doesn't look like any historical person I have ever seen images of. And the whole Cathedral is very unsafe! There are no railings or anything here, just a sheer drop. On the other hand there doesn't seem to be anything up here that fills any sort of function. But if some children ran up here to play they could get themselves killed! It's a wonder there are so many kids around this town in the first place.

[yay water]

"At least the spring is giving fresh and clean water, and it's located inside the house itself. This will be very useful if we are to set up an isolation ward here."

[muggers dot jpeg]

Damn robbers! Didn't I teach them a lesson already? And still they come out as soon as the sun sets. I feel a bit of pity, though. You can see from their wildly flailing style of fighting that they are not used to mugging people. I have already done more desperate things myself just to stay alive.

[olgimskiys - The Clot]

Big Vlad: My respect, doctor...
Bachelor: I have finished the inspection. The isolation ward will be in the Cathedral, the hospital in the Theater, and the morgue in the warehouse. Here are the keys.
Big Vlad: You have done what I should have done yesterday. Isn't this so, doctor?
Bachelor: I did what had to be done to save us from danger.
Big Vlad: I don't know how much use it will be... It seemed to me that we already agreed that the rate of death is one hundred percent... Why would you put your trust into a hospital? Victor was going to prove it somehow. Maybe you have talked to him already?
Bachelor: Yes, we found out that if you let the disease run its course it will kill everything infected, but there must be ways to find a cure before that.

Day quest completed posted:

The Cathedral and the Theater are allocated as an isolation ward and a hospital. The beak-headed Executors have already started their duties. The distribution of medicine, delivery of mail and the control over quarantined individuals will be entrusted to the masks.

"All my tasks for today are complete. I will have to take care of my wounds now, they are bleeding pretty badly and all this running around hasn't helped at all. Kapella lives just next door."

[Kapella!]

Kapella: Some awful thoughts anguish my father...
Bachelor: We all have things to worry about right now, Kapella.

"I decided to try out one of the bottles of morphine that I received as part of the medicine test. This type seems quite strong. It should be just what I need after a day as rough as today."

This is some good stuff! You can heal to full in just about 4 hours of sleep. It was probably not needed right now, but it allowed me to heal up just in time for the theater.

[zzz thx for the bed kapella]

"I woke up just after midnight. Whatever was in that bottle, it was some strong painkillers. My wounds and bruises doesn't even bother me right now. It's time for my nightly stroll down to the Theater. It's rather close to Kapellas."

[who is he talking to...? a tragedian?]

???: Have a spare coin for a poor actor? Any food? I could even swallow up all the infected meat in the forbidden storages. I just want to live a few more days, to see the end!
Bachelor: Why are you begging?
???: We have been evicted from the Theater. Now our troupe, "The Inevitable Loss", is out on the streets performing. Our impresario is sure that it is all for the better. Just look at the bewildering dance of the sick, at the convulsion of people with sown up mouths! What a great crowd scene for the pantomime!
Bachelor: If you have that many people watching, you'll get rich in no time!
???: Our audience is abundant, but few can pay us anything. Those who own money have had their arms twisted by the cruel plague so that they can't even part with their stuff.
Bachelor: Don't despair. The pantomime is still playing.

The Theater is still open for us. I hope we don't wake up the patients of the hospital!

Voice 1: One of them is attempting to fight.
Voice 2: Which one?
Voice 1: This one! But the other two will stand in his way.
Voice 2: I wonder, will he fall in a trap?
Voice 1: Yes, very interesting. Just look what they turned the theater into!
Voice 2: They must know what they're doing. Tomorrow, blood will inevitably be spilled.

After the play was over, I went back to Kapella for a proper rest.

[fuck this town dot jpeg]

Summary: We have examined both the Theater and Cathedral and for once something has gone the way we wanted them. Both buildings have access to fresh water and are useful in an emergency such as this. They will be put into use right at midnight.

After sleeping again, we are all ready to start day 5. It's now 4 am, but we are fully rested and healthy, and our infection and hunger are very low.

Our supplies are as follows. We probably have to get our gun repaired tomorrow, but we can handle the cost of that easily now. The only thing we have to worry about is immunity medicine and antibiotics.

Revolver at 58%, 27 bullets
Knife at 100%

12 rations of meat
5 boxes of powder
9 bottles of painkillers
1 dose of immunity boosters
2 doses of antibiotics
9 bandages

33 assorted items for trading
31838 money
