If that young man in the pub was right, Andrei is probably in trouble by now. I better take a detour to Gryph to see if he can help me out with some ammo.
Gryph had gotten a fresh stock of ammo and arms, but I was in a rush so I just traded for rifle ammo. He was happy to take a couple of knives off my hands.
At this point I figured the rifle would be more than enough to handle anything that the game would throw at us. I sold off all but one revolver and knife.
Rifle ammo is very cheap. As you can see I also selected another rifle. You'll find out later why we need more than one. We still got 40k to spend, and today is a great day to do so.
I can see why the townspeople doesn't venture very far from the familiar streets. You could easily get lost out on the steppe. There are dust clouds off in the distance so you can't see very far.
This must be the place! I need to be careful, this old thing seems like it's half rotten already.
Spotted! They seem to be holding two people prisoner. I can make out Andrei but the other one is obscured by the fire.
They are all coming at me, but the marsh makes it hard for them to reach me quickly. I better back off and use my revolver.
Argh, out of ammo at the worst possible times! I got a few of them but now I'll have to rely on my knife.
Thankfully, even though you are fighting 6 or so enemies, they are all very weak and not very aggressive. They also get stuck on the small bridge and you can pick them off without them even attacking you. Just make sure you don't rush right in and you should be able to avoid being surrounded.
They all had one of these strange bottles. They remind me of the Twyrine bottles, but they seem to be medical in nature. I grabbed one to examine later, but discarded all the others. They are a bit heavy compared to my pills.
These are basically the natural version of our immunity boosting pills. You'll find out more about this as the Haruspicus.
Bachelor: Where is Eve? Is she alive?
Andrei: No. I think by now she is definitely dead. I made an awful mistake. I'm glad you came but there's nothing we can do now.
Bachelor: What kind of mistake? Tell me.
Andrei: I received a farewell letter from Eve. She wrote that she was going to the Cathedral to die, by jumping off the balustrade. She was sure that by sacrificing herself she would make a miracle come true. It was a very crazy letter. It seems like she already lost her mind when she wrote it.
Bachelor: How did you react to it?
Andrei: I hardly had the time to understand it when the dancer, Aijan, appeared. She said that the Worms sent their thanks, because I had fed my woman to them. They said that now I had paid back my dues. I was sure she was talking about Eve. I thought they had kidnapped her before she jumped.
Bachelor: Was she your woman?
Andrei: She lived as she wanted but she was my woman. You have nothing to be distressed over, your woman is Maria. I would change with you if I could, but obviously she does not consider me her equal.
Bachelor: Why would you say something like that?
Andrei: Now is not the best moment to speak about it. Whether Eve was out of her mind or not, I cannot tell for sure. Did she send you a letter too?
Bachelor: It was rather strange, but she said she was going to clear a place for a new guest. Did she mean Aglaja taking residence in the Cathedral?
Andrei: Probably. She wrote to me that she wanted to set a soul free in the Cathedral building, to make up for all the horrible thing that had tainted it recently. In her inflamed head, she thought this would help my brother and me, as well as the rest of the town.
Bachelor: I think you are putting too much blame on yourself.
Andrei: Maybe you're right. Although I think of myself as an immoral man sometimes, this is too much. We need to live and work on to make this town whole again. Eve must not be lost in vain.
Bachelor: You are right.
Approaching the Cathedral made my skin crawl. I wonder if I can ever get the imagine of Eve falling from that height out of my mind. I hope Aglaja can help turn this town back to normal, before everyone goes completely crazy.
Bachelor: Here are the materials I managed to take from the agents.
Aglaja: I shall look through them... Yes, this is approximately what I expected. Figures, dates, reports. Very well, this would help us find a solution, if only the numbers weren't so mixed up. Only one of these reports can be correct.
Bachelor: Sorry?
Aglaja: It looks like the false report cannot be figured out by simple comparison. All three of them have different figures for the same things. What a pity... So, Daniel! We need to hurry before they disappear. Find out from them who is the real traitor. Outwit them.
Bachelor: Outwit? How?
Aglaja: One of them is a liar. I believe he was the one who sent you the threatening and infuriating letters. Among these papers is his farewell letter. It most likely contains false information and we can't be sure the man who carried it is the one who wrote it.
Bachelor: Why would he deliberately write down false information? If the Authorities were interested in keeping this town alive...
Aglaja: Because he is a traitor. We just need to find out which of the three it is. Also, all this time he was trying to gain the support of one of the other agents, and it seems like he partially succeeded. Only the third one remained fair up to the end.
Bachelor: How did you figure all this out?
Aglaja: One so called "well-wisher" came to me while I was preparing for the trip to this time. He knew some internal details of this affair. The interrogation of mister Olgimskiy confirmed my hypothesis. Both he and Saburov knew that the agents were here.
Bachelor: And the Kains? They too?
Aglaja: No, the Kains does not even know that the sun rises in the east. This is below their interests.
Bachelor: So what do we do now?
Aglaja: Try to find out which of them is the true liar. It's like in the old riddle. The traitor will always lie, no matter what. The supporter may tell a lie and may tell the truth. The third will tell the truth up to the end. Will you cope with such a mission?
Bachelor: Yes, I think I know how to solve this. But why don't you do it yourself?
Aglaja: No, they will tell nothing to me, even if I use torture. They hate me too much, and I don't think I can convince them of my mercy, so they have no reason to help me.
Another messenger arrived, looking for me. He had a note from Burakh, and had been looking for me for some time now.
Burakh's note posted:
The day before yesterday I rendered a service to you. Do not refuse a counter-service today. A mask and coat of the Executor is extremely necessary. Right now there is a rare demand for them, and none can be found anywhere. Perhaps something remains in the Theater, but I cannot enter there. If you have an opportunity to get them, do so! I shall give you everything you ask for these things.
Artemiy
P.S. If the Devotress comes to you with the same request, I advise you to refuse. She will deceive you. Do not tell her about this at all. Lives depends on it.
Summary: Eve is dead, and there's sadly nothing we could have done to prevent it. Andrei is safe for now.
We got to keep the rifle and ammo that were meant for Andrei, since we did the whole fight by ourselves.
We need to do some investigating to figure out who the traitor agent is. Do you have any suggestions on how to trick them?
