danko day 8 part 3 (06:07)

06:07 on Day 8

I can hardly keep my eyes open. I knew it was a bad idea to get up and run around the town so early, but I didn't expect so much trouble this early in the day. I really need some medicine.

Eve's house isn't far from here, but the whole area is infected by now. I just got to make a run for it.

The angels doesn't show up very well with the visor, but they are usually obvious enough once you get closer, since their color is so different from the rest of the town.

Of course, getting closer to one is not a good idea in the first place! For being something that's not even alive, they make really creepy enemies.

As you can see, my infection meter is very high! It's a good thing that I save so often, because I actually managed to kill myself while chugging antibiotics. To survive I had to down some, then use painkillers and sleep to get my health back up, then down some more and sleep again. But in the end we're back to perfect shape, although our medical supply is in a rather sorry state now.

I found a new letter on the bed stand. It must have been delivered while I was sleeping.

Decay from within posted:

I have studied the materials from the Agents and compared it to your conclusions and forecasts. I was once again pleasantly surprised by your insight. Have you ever considered a career as an Inquisitor? We need to finish yesterday's conversation about where to put our focus, and who our true enemy really is. You'll see that they are one and the same. The decay comes from within. I wait for you in the cathedral.

Aglaja Lilich

I better head there right away.

: What a nice girl! She talked to me so kindly. They do not like the kids talking to the Order...

Bachelor: What is this? Why are you all here?

Dog Head: We have heard so much about your feats. The embassy asked us to bring you this application. We were told that you want to sterilize us.

Bachelor: What did you just say?

Dog Head: Err, I probably did not express myself correctly... To treat us, give us medicine, wipe us with spirits, rinse our throats? To get rid of the infection.

Bachelor: Ah, that... Surely you understand that you need to be careful? We should have a vaccine ready soon.

Dog Head: Bachelor, it is not necessary to give vaccine to us. The Inquisitor has ordered it, and will ask you to do it. But don't be troubled! You will only spend your valuable medicines in vain. You better give it to the people in the town instead. We are all healthy, and we'll make sure to stay that way.

Bachelor: I don't really understand what you mean.

Dog Head: Our Tower is magical. It gives protection from the external world. Everyone knows this.

Bachelor: Magic? You're not making any sense. I'd better come with you and inspect the place, to be sure.

Dog Head: No. Khan will not let you inside. You will bring the infection with you.

Bachelor: Then how will you all get back inside?

Dog Head: We will not be let back in. We have left it, as part of the fighting group. Tomorrow we have an important mission, against the oppressors who want to destroy us. We have a different destiny than the others. The Tower repels the infection trying to get in.

Bachelor: I need some evidence that the Tower is clean, if you want to get rid of me.

Dog Head: Oh, everyone will tell you that it is. Go to Kapella! She will give you the proof if you ask her. And her conscience won't let her lie, so the evidence will be very reliable.

Bachelor: Yes, she has made that impression on me too. I will go talk to Kapella.

It will be interesting to hear what a normal sane person has to say about all this. They are doing the right thing to lock themselves in and hide from the infection, which is more than you can say about most of the adults in this town, but their strange ideas about magic may get them into trouble.

: The first part of the game has ended, Bachelor Dankovskiy. The Authorities gave you a task - to find the truth. And of course they wanted the truth to be what was good for them. In the balance they held the destiny of your laboratory and your professional honor. Do you want me to tell you something?

Bachelor: Do tell.

Aglaja: Your Tanathica is already destroyed. In it's place there are now piles of broken stone mixed with the ashes of your research. Your papers are burnt, and that damned Telman personally supervised that. And now I shall tell you about the law.

Bachelor: ... All right.

Aglaja: The law state that everything that is unnatural, everything that tries to overcome the order of this world, will inevitably be punished and brought to collapse. The illness is only a tool of this law. It is the instrument of inevitability.

Bachelor: Tool or not, I have given my word to destroy this enemy.

Aglaja: But it is actually inevitability that is your enemy. And it is impossible to win. The unique way to master it is to remove from it's path everything that is dear to you. Don't try to fight it this way!

Bachelor: If you gave me this speech before this epidemic began, you might have won me over, but I can't back down now. And neither can you.

Aglaja: Yes. And so the second part of the game begins. Now our task is to be true to ourselves. We shall hold on to the words the Authorities gave us. We shall find the truth, and we shall stop this pestilence before it swallows up the world. We just need to find the reason it all began.

Bachelor: So we have returned to the source...

Aglaja: The source? I shall tell you where to search for it. But I need to make sure you understand what the Law is.

Bachelor: I think I do, yes.

Aglaja: I'm not convinced. I will tell you about the Law. This is not the law of a state or a nation. It is the law of nature. When an evil like this suddenly springs up, it means that the law has been broken. The illness is a payment for infringement of the law. Perhaps it is an attempt to restore the balance.

Bachelor: I see what you are trying to say.

Aglaja: This town is a small universe. For the inhabitants it is The Universe. It is too far away from the external world to be part of it's workings. It is like an intricate clock. And the cogs and springs are stuck. I believe a tiny particle got inside. I want to understand just what that speck of dust really is.

Bachelor: I understand. Well, I am ready to agree with you.

Aglaja: We have too little time...

Bachelor: So, one small detail in the mechanism is spoiled. Where shall we begin?

Aglaja: What do you recommend?

Bachelor: I think we should examine the Abattoir. I cannot even enter it now. I suspect that everything began there.

Aglaja: Someone else has already gone inside. He entered it somehow, even before I got here. You can certainly try to enter too, and you should. But if I were you I would not hurry. The inside of the Abattoir holds many dangerous secrets.

Bachelor: At least the Olgimskiy will not set any more obstacles in my way.

Aglaja: You are interested in the Abattoir because you believe that the animals there could have brought the plague?

Bachelor: Possibly. I'm interested in how they handle their ceremonial burials.

Aglaja: So you think this disease could be of an underground origin?

Bachelor: Yes, there was a recent outbreak of a plague in the far south some months ago. The threat appeared during the mining of the coal deposits. The climate there is very similar to this place.

Aglaja: Have you studied the reservoirs and the local rivers?

Bachelor: Not entirely, but we've had problems with those already. The frightened workers even destroyed the water supply system some days ago. As a result the town water pipes doesn't work.

Aglaja: I suggest we check this up before we move on. Before we start with the inspection of the buildings, we should make sure that the infection didn't come from the outside through the water. Wells, springs, rivers. Everything.

Bachelor: Yes... There's one place I'd like to check up right away.

Aglaja: What is this, a well of some sort?

Bachelor: Some amateur work was being done by the son of Vladislav Olgimskiy. Some people say that he searches for the archaeological layers of some ancient culture. Others say that he searches for oil. But I'm not persuaded by either explanation.

Aglaja: And what kind of person is he?

Bachelor: With everything that's been going on lately, I'm not sure. He hasn't been very direct with me lately.

Aglaja: So you've avoided investigating it because you didn't get his cooperation?

Bachelor: I had other things on my mind, and it didn't seem important enough.

Aglaja: Talk to him, and find out what he has been digging up. And if he does not want to speak, well, there are ways to force a person to get talkative. If he has a good reason for this, I'm sure he'll be eager to explain it all to you.

Bachelor: I don't think we will need to resort to that...

Summary: So this is the actual day quest (sorry about that) and what we have to do is go to Young Vlad and talk to him about his strange well. It's actually inside his house, for some reason.

After that, we have to go to Kapella and talk to her about getting the kids to accept vaccinating. Their silly games are making it rather hard.

Then of course we still have to talk to Burakh, but that can (probably) wait.

We also need to do some shopping for medicine and food. I'll go check the stores I come across and we'll see what we can find.
