danko day 5 part 3

08:36 on Day 5

I forgot that the city hall was right in the middle of a plague zone, so when I started playing this session I went about checking my inventory and notes right there without thinking about it. You will want to do a quick check of your objectives and such when you load a save, but it's probably best to do it indoors.

I think I can get the support of Victor Kain in this matter. He's well informed and if there are any way to get those people out of jail then he probably knows about it. If nothing else, the Kains are quite wealthy and he has helped me out with money before.

: If the new commandant doesn't change his behavior, we'll soon have a rebellion on our hands. It's like his lack of power against the plague is making him take it all out on the townspeople.

Bachelor: I already know all about it. Young Olgimskiy wants to pay ransom for a few people that were arrested recently.

Victor Kain: He's a good man, that Young Vlad. Sometimes I regret that it isn't him that is in charge of the Bull project. He's more of a humanist than his father.

Bachelor: Do you know anything about the arrests yesterday?

Victor Kain: First of all, they conducted mass arrests due to the incident yesterday. All the people who took part in breaking the water pipe and the ones leading that group were supposed to be arrested. But Saburov's guards just arrested anyone they could find nearby. As a result, a few innocent water carriers are in jail.

Bachelor: Damn it...

Victor Kain: Secondly, all those who had any sort of weapon with them were imprisoned. The poor people had been preparing themselves for the fight with Braga's cruel shavers. Many armed themselves with knives and even revolvers just so that they could defend themselves and their families.

Bachelor: Well, that seems like a logical thing to do under the circumstances.

Victor Kain: And finally, all those who were found searching the bodies of the dead or were found in the areas destroyed by the marauders were caught. Some people were searching for their dead relatives or just going into their own homes to see what the looters had taken.

Bachelor: I've heard enough. Saburov will pay for this.

Victor Kain: Damn that commandant... I don't know what I would do if I were him, though. I wouldn't want to be in his situation.

Bachelor: Will you help me release the innocents from prison?

Victor Kain: I'll send Saburov my ultimatum. He will soon realize how foolish and useless his plan was. He wants to frighten the people, but he'll make them turn into an armed gang. I will make his release the prisoners by tomorrow.

Bachelor: There are infected in some of the other cells. The plague is there already. There are so many in the prison that the executioners can't even more the infected to another room.

Victor Kain: What do you propose we do?

Bachelor: The executioners that guard the prisoners have agreed to take a bribe without Soburov finding out. They want ten thousand for each person.

Victor Kain: We barely have any money left. If you tell him you have the backing of the Kains, maybe you can scare him. Tell him that we know of the executioners dark deeds, and that he'll soon find himself behind bars if he refuse to release the prisoners.

Bachelor: I don't think he'll listen. The executioners seems to do as they please. They have some very strange motives, hidden behind their masks.

Victor Kain: All right... Here, take these twenty five thousand. It should pay for at least a few people. I will write my ultimatum to Saburov anyway. If we survive the plague, then I swear he will pay for this.

Bachelor: Maybe the arrival of the Inquisitor will take care of that for you. He will be held responsible for his actions before the Authorities sooner or later.

This is supposedly the house where that hunchback is living. He's been able to move into the nicer part of town, but I honestly can't figure out who'd want him in their neighborhood.

The front door wasn't locked, so I went inside. No one seemed to take notice of the door slamming behind me. Is there really anyone living here? The whole place is very dirty and worn down.

: Oh, hey! Hey! Executor! Help me our 'ere! You walk around here and there. It's your job, ain't it? Find me daughter! This daughter of mine ain't come back!

Bachelor: Has she been kidnapped?

The Hump: She was gone by sunrise and ain't come back... I fell asleep as usual. This twyrine drinking dazed me real nice. She slept next to me. I got up in the morning and she weren't there. The neighbors ain't seen nothing... I'll give you anything you want if you find her! I'm rich, you know. Want a hundred thousand? Hum?

Bachelor: You need to tell me the details.

The Hump: Ain't no details. Just find me daughter and bring her back!

Bachelor: How will I know it's her?

The Hump: She's called Vera, she is. She's seventeen... Dark wavy hair. Real beautiful, real beautiful, hehe. She doesn't have no special features, she just sings and dances wonderful, real wonderful... But she wouldn't dance and sing in such terrible times, she wouldn't.

Bachelor: So she doesn't look like you, does she?

The Hump: Eh, ya takin' the mickey out of the old hump, ey? No? Well, you don't look for anything we have in common. She... ehe... she looks like her mother, she does.

Bachelor: Where could she have gone?

The Hump: Heh, I dunno. You just look around, you do. I reckon she's in the infected area, but who knows, she could be somewhere safe. Could have been thrown into the dungeon during this hunt of yesterday's, but I have been to the council and she ain't there.

Bachelor: There is another way of getting some money from you. What if I tell of your role in the Caravan affair?

The Hump: The Caravan... Heheh, what for would you do that? What good would it do for you?

Bachelor: You said you could pay me one hundred thousand. Why don't you hand that over right away?

The Hump: Aye, ya villain you are! You dare take the mickey out of me! You reckon I cares for me life that much, right? I'll bite your damn throat out, ya prick! Don't worm out of this.

Bachelor: Hey, don't you dare talk to me like that. I'll try to find your daughter, but I must warn you that the chances of success are very low. And if you try to get out of paying me, everyone in town will know about your past.

The Hump: Ere goes the money, then... Some in advance. I'll give you more later. This is dirty money, this is! Let it do good. I hate this thieving and all... Even Nina couldn't deprive me of me daughter. She won't be stolen from me after so many years of possession!

Bachelor: I'll be back.

That guy really gives me the creeps. I can't imagine him being any nicer before he got his back broken. However, he did give me ten thousand up front and I'm quite sure there's more where that came from. I can profit from this situation and when this is all over I can decide what to do about him.

This game can get a bit odd at times. Day 5 for Daniel is an example of when the translation was done more or less properly. It seems like they did the days totally out of order, and this was one of the first ones to be completed. Why they choose to translate the Hump into some English street kid I will never know. It sort of fits his personality as such, but when you consider that the character is actually Russian it definitely doesn't fit the rest of the game.

I'll have to report to Young Vlad and see if he can help me out. It was his request to get those prisoners out in the first place.

The town has some quite impressive architecture and machinery. They aren't really in that great shape, but almost everything seems to still work. These floodgates controls the flow of water into the marches just south of town. They almost look like great big teeth to me.

: Do you bring any good news?

Bachelor: There are six people still in jail. The executioners have asked for ten thousand for each of the prisoners.

Young Vlad: Twenty thousand is all I can afford. I hope that will somewhat restore the falling trust in the authorities.

Bachelor: That is not a small sum. Thank you.

It's high time to head back to the city hall now. I didn't think it would be this easy to raise the cash needed. It's a shame that all my friends have to bleed themselves dry and that all the cash eventually ends up in the hands of individuals hungry for power or wealth, but at least today we've managed to do something good. I wonder how they keep up their spirits when things are so bleak.

In the still healthy parts of town, the streets are almost deserted, but once you reach an infected districts it's filled with the plague victims. They seem very restless today and the guards had to run after and catch a few stragglers. It's not really a pretty sight when they beat up someone who's already half dead.

: Most honorable Bachelor?

Bachelor: I've got the money. Take it!

Executor: Well, what can I say... Let them be free! We will miss them... Though I've no doubt that the commandant will grant us newcomers quite soon.

Bachelor: You won't have time to feel bored in the days to come. I will see to it that the commandant transfer you to clean the infested houses.

I just hope that this good gesture has made an impression on the prisoners. There's a risk that they will go out and cause problems as a means of revenge, but that would definitely have happened if they were left to die.

Summary: We have been collecting money from a few people around town, and managed to get enough to bribe the jail keeper at the city hall. The prisoners are free to go home, although I'm sure some of them might get into problem again later.

We also visited the Hump, and trying to blackmail him didn't really work. He's not really a guy who cares about his reputation that much. With the plague around it's not like I can actually do much against him anyway. So instead we will try to find his 'daughter' who's gone missing.

Day Quest: Rescue Artemiy Burakh, the Haruspicus, so that he can get us an infected heart.

Task: Find out where the Humps' daughter is. We should ask Anna about this first.

Task Completed: Release the prisoners in the city hall jail.
