danko day 6 part 1 (01:22)

1:22 on Day 6

Having received the vaccine from Rubin, I decided to head over to George Kain and try to calm him down. Unfortunately I don't think it will do much good at this point. I can't tell him outright that I have been working together with Rubin from the start, because then he'll get really mad at me as well.

The streets around here are much harder to navigate now. I have to take the long way around if I want to avoid the infected areas. The robbers are as active as ever, and I can sometimes hear the guards fighting off in the distance.

As I approached the home of the Kain family, some weird orange cloud started chasing me! I must be imagining things, because it almost looked like a group of angels descending down on me. I ran like mad until I reached George's house. That bottle of painkiller I downed earlier probably wasn't a good idea. I'll need to get some more sleep after I talk to George.

This is a new type of cloud, and it's a lot better at chasing you. It's mainly a danger if you encounter it while trying to go through a narrow alley, because they can be dodged if you have plenty of room. This cloud chased me far away from the actual infected area, which took me by surprise because I through I was safe here.

: Yes?

Bachelor: I wanted to ask you about Rubin. What are you going to do to him once you find him?

George Kain: In a way, I have already found Rubin. He is going to come to me today with a confession. Say goodbye to him. Nothing you can say will make up for his crimes. Now we hope only for you.

Bachelor: Be merciful to him.

I can rest at Eve's place.

I hope Eve keeps herself healthy, especially so now with her house is surrounded by the plague victims. Still, I don't think it would be safe to try to move her through the area with all of them around. They keep walking round and round the house.

: You know, I'm almost happy now, my Daniel... I have found out how I can help you! But I'll keep it a secret for now!

Bachelor: You look different now, Eve. You look strange, as if you are not yourself... Sleep, you must be very tired. I'll go to bed myself

7:40 on Day 6

I 'wasted' some time here, even though we didn't really need the rest. To make sense of the events for day 6, you pretty much have to wait until around 7am before starting the quests.

Each morning you get a summary of the number of dead and infected, as well as a bit of foreshadowing for the near future. Note that these numbers seems to be completely arbitrary, and as we'll see today does not go well with the story at all.

There is a countdown, and we are told we have less than 7 days remaining. Remaining for what? We'll have to find out when we get there.

Victor's Note posted:

Bachelor, we have bad news. A great disaster happened in the Cathedral. More than one thousand victims. The town is threatened with a new witch-hunt. I wait for you at my place. Come as soon as possible.

Victor Kain

: So, yesterday you managed to caught this malicious enemy of ours? I've heard so, at least. There are terrible gossips in the town, about vivisected people... But I do not believe them, of course. The gossips that you have recieved a sample of infected blood appeared much more credible...

Bachelor: Exactly. The bacterium is caught and captured in glass. However, I didn't achieve that alone. I got some help.

Victor Kain: That doesn't matter now. We have more pressing events to discuss. They say that you now have a practical method of finding the identity of the Spreader, by comparing it's blood with the sample you managed to obtain yesterday. If it really is one of the townspeople, he or she will be found out one way or another.

Bachelor: This is true.

Victor Kain: A new witch-hunt begins. In the streets, stupid villains kill any woman they see. But they are not the only ones looking for someone to put the blame on. Apparently this time the commandant has his eyes on some of the most known people of our city. Several girls were accused because of the story in the Cathedral.

Bachelor: You never told me what happened in the Cathedral.

Victor Kain: The Spreader penetrated into the Cathedral this night. Everyone who was there is dead or dying. Yes, into your tight isolator. Is this a ghost or a human being? Well, it is already obvious that is is a walking person and most likely a rather ill-intentioned person at that. At least this has pleased quite a few.

Bachelor: Why?

Victor Kain: Tomorrow the Inquisitor arrives. It seems to me that someone wants to finish off several of the girls before that. Now the punishing sword hangs above Julia and Lara. They are arrested by Saburov. But Vlad Olgimskiy is also active. If the girls survive until tomorrow, the Inquisitor will establish who the true Spreader is, but... some would like to be a bit faster.

Bachelor: If they survive? What do you mean?

Victor Kain: Have you already heard about these fanatics? They are going to burn the infection out of the town, shouting something about purifying fire. If somebody informs them of these ladies and accuse them of spreading the infection, they are doomed. They will have their own homes burnt down, with them inside.

Bachelor: How do I help them?

Victor Kain: Olgimskiy thinks that he can prove their innocence. Maybe he knows the identity of the true criminal already. For some reason I do not doubt that. It has been said that this Spreader is actually hidden in the Apiary.

Bachelor: I'll go talk to Olgimskiy.

Before going to see Big Vlad, I headed toward the Cathedral. It's hard to tell what actually happened there from the rumors alone. Everyone says different things.

This is really bad! Where are all the people that were put in here? Dead? Surely the doorkeepers should have been capable of keeping the place locked down, so how could the infection have gotten inside?

Young Man: A horrible tragedy, bachelor... The infection broke into the Cathedral.

Bachelor: How did it happen?

Young Man: At first we did not understand what happened. As the first calls for help sounded, we did not hurry to open the door. When it became clear that something terrible was going on inside and someone started to bang on the door, we realized that the same thing had happened as in the Apiary.

Bachelor: Damn it...

Young Man: The keepers decided that it would be more reasonable to hold the doors closed. The agony lasted about one hour. Too many people were stuffed in here.

Bachelor: Why did they die so quickly?

Young Man: They didn't all die that fast, but by then they were in no shape to fight back. Those who could still stand were brought to the hospital. Those who showed signs of a serious infection were left in the Cathedral. The keepers looked after them, and the dead were taken away to the Earth. They felt it was their fault. Almost all of them were lost.

Bachelor: Start the investigation, I want to know all the details.

Young Woman: I do not think that the girl in the Cathedral was a demon... She probably wished them good. There were stores of food and water here, she probably only wanted to feed the weakest. Maybe she casually brought something with her, not knowing it was infected. And maybe the infection got in here some other way, and she is innocent?

Bachelor: What can you tell me about this girl?

Young Woman: At night an unknown girl got into the Cathedral. Some people say that she climbed in through a window, but I think she got in through the entrance door. Tricked the doormen somehow. She was probably afraid, poor child, and see what happened!

Bachelor: I ordered the Cathedral to be protected very strictly. Nobody was to be let in, no matter who they were.

Teenager: Everyone tell lies! The salty liquid was neither water nor tears. The damned she-cannibal sprinkled blood on their lips! Yes, that was the ritual, in the days of the Blind Auroch. Notkin told me that.

Bachelor: I don't understand. What are you talking about?

Teenager: I speak about blood. Now you have to search. What about it isn't clear?

Bachelor: Are people already searching for the she-cannibal? Again?

Teenager: She has almost been found. The guard of the Cathedral was bribed by one of the young town ladies. It's clear how she managed that. She crept into the Cathedral naked, in just a cloak, and splashed the benches with infected rat blood! The people inside didn't even wake up.

Bachelor: What happened then?

Teenager: At night, it got them all. They woke up in the morning. Those who were not dead were just about to die. They started to break down the doors, but in vain. No one is to be let out without your order! Here you are, another half-thousand corpses. It's good that nobody from our gang was here then. Fools.

Bachelor: This is awful!

It seems like it's too late to do anything for the people who used to take shelter here. Damn it! When we find the person responsible for this there will be hell to pay. The situation is bad enough without someone going around causing disasters all over town. And I refuse to believe this was an accident. The guards should have made it clear that the Cathedral was closed. I doubt the guards on duty will confess to me who let the girl in, but when the Inquisitor arrives he will have his hands full.

Kapella's Note posted:

My father wants to arrange a meeting with you today. Come to me before seeing him. I have to warn you. Enough blood has already been spilled, and today they wish to spill more of it. What if someone dear to you appears among the sentenced?

: Do you know that the instigators are going to attack the Apiary?

Bachelor: What reason would they have?

Kapella: They burn out the infection. They believe that the infection creeps from the Apiary. The most horrible gossips are about the Apiary. And my father does not want to lift even a finger!

Bachelor: Maybe the burning of the Apiary would be favorable to him?

Kapella: Don't speak that way! Ah, I want to believe that my father is not involved with this awful scheme.

Bachelor: But how do you know about all this?

Kapella: My brother found out somehow. He is apparently the only one who cares enough. He is striving to stop them himself, only he does not know how.

Bachelor: I have already talked to him, and I will help him out.

While Kapella didn't really have any news for me, I appreciate that she cares. At least she didn't have any more bad news or requests to pile on me. I better talk to her father right away, it seems urgent.

: Bachelor?

Bachelor: Do you know about the Cathedral?

Big Vlad: Yes. Saburov thinks that is could be either Lara or Julia. But I am sure that they are innocent. Either Anna Angel or the criminal-concealer named Ospina is the guilty one. These women are familiar to you, I take it?

Bachelor: I have met them, yes.

Big Vlad: You now have a definite way of finding the guilty. A sample of infected blood! So take blood from those two women and compare it with your sample.

Bachelor: On what basis do you suspect them?

Big Vlad: They are strangers, and they wish evil upon us!

Bachelor: I shall check them up, but I think your accusations are unfounded.

When I left the building, I got a letter from Maria. I haven't seen her in quite a while, but she seem to keep track of what is going on in town. I'm not sure I have enough time to go talk to her, though. We'll see.

Maria Kain's caution posted:

I should warn you. Today the commandant will finish one of his disgusting intrigues. He intend to use you in the role of the judge as well as the executioner. Do not all him to trick you into this. Be aware of what he is asking of you. The victims may very well be hiding some unpleasant secrets, but I am sure they are all innocent.

I suspected something like this already, but Maria knows the rulers of the town better than I do. They all got something to hide and things would be simpler if a few specific ladies went away. I'll just have to be sure of what I'm doing before I start accusing anyone of the actual crime. If I have solid evidence I shouldn't need to feel guilty about it, at least. But what motives does the Kain family have?

Summary: Loads of text today, I hope you can cope with it!

The infection has reached the Cathedral, which we were using as an isolation ward. Someone has gotten inside despite strict orders to keep the doors closed. This person is called the Spreader. Rumors claim that it was a young woman who deliberately brought the infection with her. Everyone has their own reasons for accusing someone in particular.

We can accuse either Lara, Julia, Anna or Ospina, and take a blood sample from them. If they are infected, it will show under the microscope. The first one officially found to carry the infection will most likely be killed, either by the crazed arsonists or by the power-hungry rulers of town. But what if we accuse someone who is actually innocent?

Who do you think did it?
