When you start a new game, you're confronted with this screen; upon selecting Dankovsky you see the following introductory cutscene.
"Before I went to sleep, Eve Yahn told
me that she'd been expecting my arrival. She said she'd been told by
the daughter of one of the rulers of this town to prepare her house
and wait for me. But the letter from my college didn't mention this.
I better ask her later about it. For now, I'll think through what I
need to do today."
Mission Statement posted:
My mission so far is quite
vague. The results of the examination of this fabled Simon Kain, a
person some claim to be immortal, could overturn the basis of modern
medicine and change the scientific views on death in
general.
However, even if I can confirm that this Simon Kain
exists, that will not be enough to prevent the Authorities from
closing down my laboratory. I need a way of contacting him and
letting me examine him myself.
I must also make sure not to
lose his trust. If Simon, a man of power and authority, finds some of
my questioning insulting and dismisses me, it will be very hard for
me to write a new page in the history of medicine.
The mission statement is basically your character's goal for the whole game. It will be updated, added to and changed from time to time, as your character achieves goals or finds out new information.
"There
is also the letter from Isidor that caused me to come to this
backwater town in the first place. Maybe I better double-check it.
He's the only person in this town that I know."
Isidor Burakh's message posted:
Dear Bachelor Dankovskiy!
I
have found out with great sadness that the Authorities have ordered
the closure of your laboratory, the place that became famous due to
your discoveries on the processes of death.
Is it true that
they called your work 'scientific extremism'? If there are people who
think that studying the maters of natural death and aging is a
hopeless business, I have found a case that could shut them up and
restore your good name.
The ruler of our town, Simon Kain, is
a living example of truly inexplicable longevity. I cannot explain
this phenomenon. You must come immediately. This could be the way for
you to save your laboratory.
As always, your faithful servant
and colleague, Isidor Burakh.
P.S. I have spoken to Simon
already. He has graciously agreed to render assistance to such a
celebrity as yourself.
Letters arrives at certain times each day, and they will provide you with both information regarding the important story-quests as well as where to find the various optional side-quests, if you wish to do them. Letters will arrive automatically to you, regardless of where you are. All letters are stored away and you can read them at any time. The strange symbols you sometimes see in the lower left of the screen indicates the arrival of a letter, quest update or similar.
"Now I feel ready to ask Eve for
directions. She was kind enough to lend me the whole upper floor of
her house. She seems to be rather well off, but it's strange for her
to live alone in a big place like this."
"This is my bed. It's a bit old fashioned, but I'm used to long nights at the laboratory and any bed is good enough for me. I slept very soundly tonight. Eve said I could stay here for as long as I like, and it's good to know that I have a place to go back to when I feel tired. I also keep my notes by the bedside."
"I also brought my portable lab with me, as well as some important books. With this, I should be able to analyze samples taken from Simon Kain, and see if there is anything special about his blood or organs. It may seem like a lot of equipment to carry with me all this way, but I want to be prepared for every eventuality."

"Downstairs I find Eve already awake.
She seems anxious about something, so I talk to her."
VERSUS
Eve Yahn: Did those sounds
wake you up too? I've been hearing a terrible laugh and loud noises
from outside the window.
Bachelor: I was so tired from last night that I slept very soundly. Who do you think is out there?
Eve: It seems some strangers are in my back yard. I don't think they mean us any harm, but I have a bad feeling about this... I'm afraid to go talk to them. I hope they go away soon so we can get back to sleep.
Bachelor: Why are you so sure they don't want to harm us?
Eve: This is a small town... There are no crimes here, especially not in this part of town. Of course, everyone now and then some young people get into fights, or play pranks on each other, but most of the time they don't really bother anyone else. But recently I've been hearing a lot of ugly rumors and it's making me nervous.
Bachelor: I can go and check. I have to hurry, though, when the morning comes I must be ready to meet this father figure of yours, Simon.
Eve: And you are prepared to leave the company of a charming woman for that terrible old sorcerer? That's too bad. Simon won't leave, you know. He's always been here, and he always will be here, even if the moon were to fall from the skies. Please, stay with me for a while.
Bachelor: What did you just say? Simon is a sorcerer? Is that why he has lived such an unusually long life?
Eve: Are you in that much of a hurry? Come on, Simon and the rest of his family can wait until the morning comes. Take your clothes off and have a rest on my bed. Let me warm your hands. You are so anxious to see Simon, as though your life depended on it.
Bachelor: My life... Yes, when my laboratory is about to be closed down, then my whole life's pursuit depends on that remarkable man. If he has really managed to live that long, then he will help me defeat death. There must be something special about him that I can analyze.
Eve: Death... So that is the enemy you chose for yourself. Isn't that hard? No one has managed to defeat that evil yet.
Bachelor: My enemy is no evil being. I want to defeat inevitability itself. I am challenging the forces of nature.
Eve: I don't understand...
Bachelor: I can barely understand it myself. Maybe it's just from our point of view as humans that death has to happen to every living person. Maybe there is some way we can avoid it, if we only knew how? That's a serious question and I think Simon can help me answer it. So where is the key to my victory?
Eve: He lives not very far from here. The Kain family lives in a set of buildings called the Horns, on the bridge square. But let me give you a piece of advice.
Bachelor: Go on.
Eve: Simon has two younger brothers. The oldest of them, George, is called the Judge by the locals. Visit him first, he might be awake even at this time of day. He will teach you how to speak with Simon properly. The younger brother is named Victor. Victor has a daughter, Maria, who would also like to see you. That's probably important...
Bachelor: Was it Maria that knew about my arrival?
Eve: Yes, she told me you would be coming. Maria shared her secrets with me. She's can be a bit strict, but that's how the Kains are. It was she who told me that you would be coming, and that you would defeat death. That's exactly what she said... It's a strange coincidence.
Bachelor: All right, I'll go talk to them.
Eve: Come back to me after you speak to the Kains. They will probably say and do a lot of things that will confuse you. I have some advice that will help you... if you need it.
Bachelor: Okay, I will come back.

"I put on my coat and head for the
front door. Simon Kain lives just nearby and with any luck I should
have good results to report back to the capital before dinnertime."
Summary: We woke up in the house of Eve Yahn, where we go come back and rest when we need to. After talking to her, we now know where Simon Kain lives. We should head over and talk to him as soon as possible, but before that we better find one of his brothers, George Kain. It seems Simon can be a bit peculiar and George can give us some hints on how to best approach and talk to him.

random notes as I read more:
ReplyDelete"Turns out that if you do not even try to isolate the plague, the person who dies at the end of day 1 is Daniel himself, so you're pretty screwed if you can't even make it that far."
"Later in day one, around 10:00PM, if you haven't completed the days tasks you'll get a letter from Subarov's wife telling you to have a chat with her. When you do, she'll say that she's seen a vision of you dying when it hits 12:00AM.
DeleteI think you can actually do what the Bachelor does best and dismiss her as a loony, but I never thought to actually try intentionally failing. You'll make a note in your journal when you beat the day's events remarking on how her vision never came true.
The funniest part of all this is it's Pathologics' way of telling you to hurry up, but actually going to Saburov's wife and finding out what she has to say takes time. This game does not want you to screw around but it's more than willing to play with you."
